As of 5pm on Wednesday 25 March, 236 MPs from many parties had signed a letter calling on the government to provide emergency support for the voluntary sector, as they have for businesses and employees.
The same day, Boris Johson stated at Prime Minister's Questions that a package of measures was being discussed. We hope that the package will be finalised soon. Charities provide services to millions of people, including some of those who are most in need. Fundraising work has had to stop, community centres have been told to close their doors and the sector is in crisis. Many charities will simply close down without more support.
Last week RedbridgeCVS, along with 700 other organisations, signed a letter to the Prime Minister calling for more support. Since then we've worked with the Council, Mutual Aid and other partners to respond to the current situation, including recruiting almost 400 local volunteers. The voluntary sector is trying to meet the challenge of the pandemic - we can't do that if many organisations are deprived of resources.
