RedbridgeCVS offers help with IT

Friday, 11 September, 2020

IT is crucial to the work of charities and community groups. The Covid pandemic has highlighted that - groups with robust IT have been much better placed to carry on working. But IT can be expensive and complicated.

RedbridgeCVS provides a range of services to help you use IT to run your organisation – to manage your work, raise funds and communicate with stakeholders. Our real-world advice is all tailored to the needs of small charities and community groups, and we talk in plain English, not technical jargon.

IT healthchecks – get a real-world plan to sort out your problems

Our free IT healthcheck helps you assess the use you’re making of IT and plan to use IT more effectively. We visit you – or meet up using Zoom or Teams – and produce a brief action plan for your trustees or managers to help you develop an IT strategy. The action plan makes sure that:

  • Your plans for IT are integrated into your overall plans for your organisation
  • Your trustees, staff and/or volunteers have the skills they need to manage your IT
  • You’re budgeting for IT effectively
  • You have the right policies and practices as regards security, data protection and health and safety
  • You have effective systems to record your work and report to funders
  • You’re making effective use of the web and social media to promote your organisation

We found the healthcheck very useful. It was a starting point to discuss amongst our team our situation about our IT. It helped us identify a clear plan about what we need to do, and to seek funding or free resources to make the changes needed.

Website development – get a customised site from as little as £10 a year

Every organisation needs a website. We live in an online world, and if an organisation doesn’t have a website many people will wonder if it still exists, or how well-run it is. An organisation without a website may be less credible in the eyes of public bodies or funders. And you’re missing out on a vital way of promoting the work you do.

We can help you set up a website using WordPress, the software that powers over 1 in 3 sites. We’ll discuss with you – in person, or remotely using Zoom or Teams – how you want your site to look, and what key information you want people to know about what you do. Then we’ll set up the site for you, and provide you with training and reference materials so you can run it yourselves in future.

You’ll need to make some payments each year to keep your website online, beginning at the start of us working with you – but these could be under £10 if you're a registered charity, or about £60 a year if you're not.

For full details of what's involved, see here.

Could you work with us on a project to support service users?

Understanding IT isn't just important for community groups and charities, but for the people who use our services. Devices like smartphones and tablets are cheaper than computers and easier to use – but many people still struggle. We're thinking of developing a project which would employ staff who are members of different communities – for example, who speak community languages – to work with people to help them get the hang of online services. This is the same kind of approach we've used successfully with our Health Buddies to do health promotion work. The first step would be to run a pilot project, to demonstrate there's a need for a service like this, and to see how well our plans work in practice. If your organisation would be interested in being involved, contact us - details below.
