Why is Scrutiny Important?
Scrutiny is an important function of the Council which helps ensure accountability of decision-makers through independent examination of policies and decisions about local services. It is championed by locally elected councillors that sit on a number of Committees which cover different service areas. They aim to improve services by questioning service delivery, monitoring performance, and making recommendations, both before and after implementation.
At Redbridge, the Place Scrutiny Committee recently made 20 recommendations to the Cabinet Member for Civic Pride through a Task & Finish Group, set up specifically to support the policy-making function within Highways and Transportation through in-depth investigation. The recommendations include opportunities to encourage modal shift towards active travel, walking, cycling and public transport, and to support the national climate change agenda.
Suggest a topic to ensure Scrutiny Committees are looking into the things that matter the most to local residents.
